Beginning New Year of Sophomore English

 Happy end of 2020! 

Before you completely shut off your brains and computers before next semester, I need you to do a few things in preparation for English II. 

#1- Set up Remind (Links to an external site.) and/or download the app on your phone (Links to an external site.).  You can text @pays24 to 81010. This is the fastest way to keep in touch with each other. 

#2- Should have Canvas on your phone (Apple (Links to an external site.) or Android (Links to an external site.))

#3- Definitely Have your school account on your phone (email specifically)

#4- Over the break, log in to Canvas to access your English II course; then, access Actively Learn from the navigation menu. Your first assignment is available and due January 15- Apple (Links to an external site.) or Chrome. (Links to an external site.)

#5- Sign in to Clever (Apple (Links to an external site.) or Android (Links to an external site.)). You can get there from your NCEdCloud, (Links to an external site.) and then access these apps:

  5. When everyone is finished with the Stems Quiz, we will quickly complete a Sentence Combining Practice in the Writing Section of your Notebook.

  5. Pick up Notes handout from front desk
  6. The first time students watched it to get a general sense of the commercial. After the initial viewing, each time we asked students to focus on specific aspects of the commercial:                1. Imagery (Muted)
  7. 2. Printed Words (Muted)
    3. Spoken Words (No visual)
    4. Music (No visual)

    In other words, on the second viewing students only focused on the images on the screen. The video will be muted. On the third viewing, they only focused on the printed words, and so on. By the end, they had closely read this "text" FIVE times. This forced the students to dig below the surface and develop a clear understanding of what the author was doing in the advertisement.

    After each viewing, we asked the students to fill out each row, starting with the middle "Notes" column.

    In the left-hand margin, students summarized what the author was SAYING through the images, printed words, spoken words and music. In their own words, they summarized what each element was trying to accomplish.

    In the right-hand margin, students analyzed what the author was DOING for each element. This is where we applied the appeals and fallacies from the notes over rhetoric. Students had to really dig in to get a full understanding of what the author was doing - how they were appealing to and manipulating their audience.

  7. We will begin presentations on Critical Literary Theory. You and your partner will share a brief summary of your theory, briefly summarize your text, and share your document/assignment to the class.  
  8. Each person has access to the file and will look at the work during presentations.  
  9. Access to the file is cut off during class so that no one can edit after the assignment is due.

  9. We will then review the Standards Checklist you picked up the first day in class.  This is a list of most of the standards that are tested on your EOC.  You will pre-assess yourself with a B marking each block.  Then, we will discuss which standards the Body Biography covered.  
  10. Lastly, you will work with your partner finishing your Literary Lens Workbook assignment.(3rd 4th).
  11. If you finish early, work on: Quill, IXL, reading, or Actively Learn due Thursday.

  5. After finishing the packet, you and a partner (mostly everyone) will be assigned a reading and a literary theory.  You will work together to read the notes about the critical lens and complete the assignment on the digital workbook.  You will present together on Wednesday in class. 
  6. Report cards sent home today.

  3. Turn in completed contact/contract form to the metal basket.
  4. Turn in interest survey to the black basket.
  5. Pick up the Close Reading and Annotating handout from the front table.
  6. Log on to your Chromebook. Go to IXL.  Log in using Clever (NCEdCloud). There is also an app available to download and use.
    • We will do IXL on Tuesdays after Sentence Combining. (This is a change from Read Theory. You must complete the diagnostic by January 24.)
  7. In your Notebook, in the Reading Section, create a chart for tracking your reading and setting goals. 
  8. We will begin reading on Monday.  You should have your first IRP novels assigned tomorrow.  You can choose to read your IRP novel or any novel of your choosing.  Due dates for the IRP elements are posted in Google Classroom.

Agenda

  1. As you enter the room, look for the color on the back of your sticker that corresponds with the appropriate station.
  2. You will be moving around, so please place all bags out of the way.
  3. You will need: pen/pencil, notebook or folder for handouts, Chromebook, & your phone for 1 station only. Your phone will not be out any other time except for station #2.
  4. Do not touch or open folders until I tell you to do so.
  5. Before you leave each station, make sure your table is clean and organized for the next rotation.
  6. You will have 14 minutes to complete each station and 1 minute for rotations.
  7. Anything not completed in class is for homework.
